I’ve started to dismantle the Charles Lancaster Boxlock. It’s got a very interesting trigger action and I’ve created a small video of it working prior to it’s breaking down for cleaning up.

Sounds brutal doesn’t it? Well actually the use of glass bead blasting is quite new to me. But the results are truly brilliant. The thing about glass beads is that they are very mild in what they do, rather than sand that will strip anything quickly, in that it’s a perfect media for taking...

Put my gunsmithing therapy to good use today. Finished the stock and put the lock work back together. I had to ponder for a time to remember how the ingenious trigger lock system worked. Fascinating piece of engineering actually and this gun is the first I’ve seen that employs such a system. I believe...

Half way there in my opinion. It’s quite nicely figured, not as I would say full figured, but it’s not a bat piece of wood. I’m very close to finishing this lovely and quite unique shotun now..can’t wait to use it.

It’s time for the Bland to get the case colour hardening treatment. I’m trying something new here after talking to Doug and Chris about some of the things to try. I’ve encased the whole action with attached sideplates in some very expensive (rip off Britain) stainless steel foil. I’ve then made sure that none...

Having been convinced that muzzle loading was a fascinating pasttime I’ve now been (hand behind back) pushed into getting one. Didn’t pay a lot but actually it’s really nice, it’s a London maker and just fascinating to work on. Here it is…quite plain but the engineering is superb. I love the fancy forearm metalwork...

I’ve started the refinishing of the Lang. It’s actually a nice piece of wood under there. It took a little steaming of dents and then the applying the gunstock linseed based finish can start. I’m going to put on around 40-50 coats…see how nice I can get this finish. A new gallery: Lang 4

The latest project to get the CCH treatment. I used metal wire around the action to try and cause disruption to the quenching process as the water envelops the metal parts. The two sidelock plates were bolted to my 4mm metal stock off cuts as I’ve learnt that this really does make a difference...

It’s always a scary prospect heating metal to 820 degree for an hour then letting it cool slowly. Anyway, Thomas Bland came out fine and it’s soft and ready for the clean up before the Colour Case Hardening can begin. Here are some photos taken early this morning before breakfast of the parts just...
