So when hot blacking using blacking salts. You have to make sure that the fluid boils at 144 degrees C. This is the proper rolling boil. If it boils earlier then you’ll need to wait for some of the water to evaporate and the temperature will gradually rise. If it goes over and too hot then that’s tricker. I wouldn’t recommend putting cold water in to dilute the liquid. It’s likely to cause a nasty injury and at the very least boil over. Anyway, once the metal items are as clean and shiny as you can get them then pop them in once the liquid is to temperature. Just 5-6 minutes is enough. Take them out and dunk into a large bucket/sink of water. Clean off the salts fluid and take a look. Once happy, dry them off and then I cover them in a curing oil over night.
