Westley Richards – Transitional Hammer

I’ve grabbed this at Holts. It’s rather a pretty little gun. Made in 1867 it’s an early bar-in-wood hammer gun from Westley Richards. Needs lot’s of work but it’ll be nice when it’s done. Here are some photos;

Westley Richards Tour

I nipped off to Westley Richards for a couple of hours this afternoon. I’d been invited much as a thankyou for my work on the “savethebirminghamgunquarter.co.uk” campain. They are truly lovely people. What a wonderful company. I was shown around everywhere and even watched a new .470 and 500 rifle being fired for alignment...

W.W Greener Restoration Complete

This gun has been waiting for the stock to be finished. I put the final coat on last night and other than a bit of oil it’s done. I saw this gun and auction at the last Holt’s. I’d wanted a Greener to restore for a long time and really like them. This is...

I’ve got the Greener stock back from Mike. Which means 1) it’s re-checkered and 2) this weekend I can put the gun back together which I’ve been really looking forward to.

Colour Case Hardening…dropping the gear

Here’s a little video of me and an old friend (I’m the one limping) colour case hardening the Greener action and other pieces. My friend, after this first time he had helped me, said “Bloody hell you didn’t tell me it was going to do that!”…

Greener – Sear wear

Hi folks, the Greener has a problem it appears. The left hand barrel hammer and sears appear to be malfunctioning…possibly due to wear…A Tig welder is a great tool. The Tig was used to extend the sears. Careful job this as they have to be just the right length.

Greener Colour Case Hardened

It’s a subjective matter this colour case hardening subject. Some hate it, I love it, within my own bounds as to what constitutes a good subject gun to do it with. The Clarke and the Greener I believe are two guns that really would look lovely if they were restored to their former beauty....

Greener Barrels – Browning complete

It’s true that every barrel browns differently. Some deep brown, some with super contrast, some with twist you can hardly see once browned. These have come up really nicely. Only 5-6 passes needed. They were not going to get any darker and they look just perfect to my eyes. Finished off with caustic soda...

Greener Stock – Dents, Closing the Grain

There’s a nice stock under there! After taking out the dents using my usual method of heating a bolt with a heavy nut on the end and laying it onto a damp tissue over the dent to steam it up I’ve rubbed in some sealing oil and it’s starting to take shape…here are some...

Greener Stripped

It’s amazing that even a gun that looks really clean and looked after from the outside can still have rust and corrosion inside. As you can see from the photo’s often the only way to properly clean and restore is to take the gun down to all of its component parts. That way you...
