Hussey and Hussey Repaired

This one tool much more therapy. Titanium rods to make it strong and wet glued to get into every grain. Now extremely strong and the fine work around the join is completed. Finish now taking place then it’s off to the checkering expert for that work. It’s coming along nicely! Some pictures of the...

Hussey & Hussey

My search for a new project ended over the weekend with…another broken hand project. My weakness is my love of anything Hussey made and this example, other than the break, is stunning. Barrels are spotless, it has 90% of it’s original colour case hardening and it just a splendid example. It’s also a single...

Charles Lancaster Sidelock – Completed

I’ve spent the last couple of nights sitting (and not able to do much else!) at my little table putting this gun back together after spending several weeks restoring it. I really like Lancasters and this gun has some lovely engraving on it. It’s my first attempt at barrel blacking, the old fashioned way,...

Charles Lancaster – Slide and Tilt

Charles Lancaster – Slide and Tilt

I’ve been staring deeply into the locking mechanism of the Lancaster hammer gun. The action is called a “Slide and Tilt” action and Lancaster himself claims to have developed the patent (although it appears a Frenchman got there 5 or so years before and Lancaster “tweaked it further”. On close inspection one can see...

Charles Lancaster Hammer

A friend asked if I knew there was a local auction on this week. I had no idea but I’m glad he called me. On Thursday evening I popped over to see what guns they had. An intereting Garden (short lived London maker in mid 19th Century) and a Lancaster. The Lancaster uses an...

Thomas Bland – Completed

The Bland is done. I’m really pleased with it. It’s a gun from around 1920 and it’s finely made but simpy decorated. It’s actually really nice to handle and I’m going to do some (ahem) walked up shooting this weekend with it. In the restored case with original label it looks just fine. It’s...

Lancaster and Bland Stocks

Lancaster and Bland Stocks

I’ve been refinishing the stocks for both of these sidelocks. Coming along nicely. I’m trying a new format of 6-7 coats of London gunstock finish, first slurried, then finishing with 10 coats of very fine french polish…the last phase will be to dull them down for a fab satin finish.

Lancaster Boxlock Barrels finished

Lancaster Boxlock Barrels finished

These barrels were originally blacked when I purchased the gub..to my surprise, underneath, beautiful twist. This just had to be rectified. Using my usual browning process it didn’t take long for these to come good. Finished and neutralised the barrels in a warm bath of water and caustic soda and just oil over the...

Charles Lancaster Sidelock

Charles Lancaster Sidelock

This gun is from around 1914. It has an exquisite engraving style and is typical of the quality that one expects from the Charles Lancaster stable. I always hold and marvel at sidelocks, got a bit of a soft spot for London sidelocks I must say, and it is always a pleasure to look...

Barrel Blacking the traditional way

By

September 25, 2010

I’ve been researching this black art. One needs to rust the barrels and then in between each carding session, in fact just before a carding, one boils the barrels. With this in mind I’ve built a dedicated “boiler” with a friend of mine which uses an emersion heater element (with the thermostat taken out...
